Abrie joined the South African Defence Force in 1975 and qualified as a dentist in June 1981 from the University of Pretoria. He acted as dentist in charge of a four chair General Dental Clinic in the South African Air Force.
In January 1983 he became a senior training officer until December 1985. Duties included the teaching of medical doctors, dentists, pharmacists, health inspectors and veterinarian surgeons about the rules and regulations as exercised in the SA Defence Force. His duties included training of operational medical soldiers and development of medical training curriculae and courses. He achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.
In January 1986 he became senior dentist at 1 Military Hospital in the Orthodontic Dept. and started as full time registrar at the University of Pretoria. He completed his Masters degree in Orthodontics in December 1990. He acted as head of the Orthodontic Dept in 1 Military Hospital from January 1989 to February 1991.
At the end of February 1991 he started his own private practice. He was sole owner of 3 private Orthodontic practices form March 1991 to October 2003. He had the opportunity to work with experienced specialists in the fields of Oral Surgery, Fixed and Removable Prosthetics and Periodontology.
He moved to the UK in November 2003 and is currently the sole owner of the practices in Orpington and Guildford. He is registered on the Specialist List of the British General Dental Council.
Special interests in Orthodontics include:
- Early intervention in growing patients with the specific aim of preventing extractions of permanent teeth, functional therapy and to reduce the need for facial surgery, especially in Class II and Class III malocclusions.
